Course Information
Description The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology. Systems to be studied include endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance), and reproductive (including human development and genetics).
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

-The REQUIRED items for the Bio 2102 lab (A&P2) are as follows:
1)Lab Manual for Human Anatomy & Physiology, a Hands on Approach by Greene, Robinson, and Strong. 1st ed. Pearson Publishing,
ISBN:978-01-354-79-391. This is ABSOLUTELY required. 

2)Modified Mastering A&P Access code that goes with the lecture textbook by Amerman. This MAP access code is ABSOLUTELY required.

3)RECOMMENDED for lab is the textbook that is required for the lecture course: "Human Anatomy & Physiology", 2nd ed by Erin Amerman, Pearson Publishing. Any other A&P book can also be used as a reference.
Additional Materials/Resources A computer and internet access are required.
Corequisites/Prerequisites Corequisite(s): BIOL 2302. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 2301 and BIOL 2101
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
2. Locate and identify anatomical structures.
3. Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems, and virtual simulations.
4. Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
5. Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.
6. Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.
7. Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills, including, but not limited to, inferring, integrating, synthesizing, and summarizing, to make decisions, recommendations, and predictions.

Lecture Topics Outline All pre-lab assignments are completed using information in the textbook, lab book, the lab handout, and using the Mastering A&P website. The pre-lab assignments are completed on the Pearson Mastering A&P site and are accessed by the link on the LAB course website. The same Pearson Mastering A&P access code is used for both Lecture Pearson Mastering Assignments and Pre-Lab Pearson Mastering Assignments.

Major Assignments Schedule Lab Exam 1 (Endocrine System and Heart Anatomy & Function will begin at 12:01 am on 7/20/23 and will end at 11:59 pm on 7/21/23.

Lab Exam #2 over Arteries, Veins, Blood, & Immunity will begin on 7/27/23 at 12:01 am and will end on 7/28/23 at 11:59 pm.

Lab Exam #3 over Digestive, Respiratory system, and Urinary system will begin at 12:01 am on 8/3/23 and will end at 11:59 pm on 8/4/23.

Lab Exam #4 Reproductive systems, Human Development will begin at 12:01 am on 8/9/23 and will end at 11:59 pm on 8/10/23.

All pre-lab Pearson Mastering assignments are completed using information in the textbook, lab book, the lab handout, and using the Mastering A&P website.
The pre-lab assignments are completed on the Mastering A&P site and are accessed by the link on the LAB course website. The same Pearson Mastering A&P access code is used for both Lecture Pearson Mastering Assignments and Pre-Lab Pearson Mastering Assignments.

This is an online class. It is YOUR responsibility to have a RELIABLE computer AND Internet access for the duration of this course. Please note that while many of the course materials can be accessed using a cell phone and/or tablet device, there are many questions on the homework assignments that can only be accessed on a computer (desktop or laptop).
In addition; EXAMS CAN ONLY BE TAKEN ON A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP COMPUTER.

If your computer breaks for any reason during the semester, IT DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU FROM THE REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINES OF THE COURSE. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure all assignments and exams are completed by their due date. Any assignments and/or exams not completed by the end of the availability date will receive a grade of "0" zero.

80 - 89=B
70 - 79=C

Determination of
Final Grade		 Each lab exam will count 20% toward your final lab average.
There will be 4 lab exams which will represent 80% of your grade.
The average of all of the online pre-lab assignments and projects will count for 20% of your final lab average.

No grades are dropped when calculating averages.
No makeup exams are given, and there are NO re-takes on any exam.

All lab exams must be taken as scheduled during your lab period.  
Lecture and Lab grades are NOT combined. Each course will be graded independently.
Exams that are not taken as scheduled will receive a grade of zero.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies It is imperative that you check your email EVERY DAY. This is an online class and email is the only way I have to contact you. You MUST use the "Send Email" link from within the course when emailing me. If you wish to email me about a grade, you must email me from the "send email" link within the course website.
Attendance Policy This is an online lab and it is the responsibility of each student to have a RELIABLE computer AND Internet access for the duration of the course. Computer labs at LSCPA are available for use.

Please note that some course material may not be accessible using a cell phone and/or tablet device. In this online class there are no scheduled class "meeting times" and it is your responsibility to manage your schedule to include completion of course requirements as scheduled.

Handouts for all labs are posted on the course website. These contain information about the lab topic, indicate the sections of the lab workbook assigned for that lab, references to images posted on the course website, as well as questions over lab content. These lab handouts are designed to provide you guidance on what to study. They are not submitted for grading.

You will have one extra day to take an exam after the scheduled availability period ends, but there will be a time penalty imposed (20% time reduction for taking the exam one day late).

If you miss an exam because of an excused absence, your lowest lecture exam score will be used as the score for the exam that you missed. Excused absences include medical and family emergencies and are determined at the instructor's discretion. You can only miss one exam with an excused absence (excluding the final), and you must take the final exam. Poor preparation, vacation, or conflict with other scheduled exams is not a valid excuse for missing an exam.

August 7, 2023 - Final day to drop a course or withdraw with academic penalty.

I will not discuss grades over the phone. You may request your grades by e-mail from your Lamar State College-Port Arthur e-mail account (for example, doeja@lamarpa.edu) or by student-instructor conference.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
HB 2504 This syllabus is part of LSCPA's efforts to comply with Texas House Bill 2504.
